NY mid-town lobby
Challenge
The design team wanted a very aerial look for these rounded corners column covers, made of oxidized stainless steel.
The color was asked to be as consistent as possible, with no exposed fasteners and no welding marks.
Solution
Using a relatively light gauge of stainless sheet (0.060"), we simply field-glued the piece to the plywood substrate.
The fire rated birch plywood substrate had be installed exact.
By doing so, we did not need brackets to fasten the metal.
Prior to oxidation, the face of the stainless sheet underwent a "long grain" mechanical preparation, in order for the oxides to penetrate more regularly into the surface of the metal.
This allowed to better control the tint of the final product.
Upgrade of the lobby of an existing office building. Because the space is occupied, our renovation work must go by phases so that occupants can always enter the building and access at least one elevator bank.
