The Eugene : 3 Manhattan West

1) 3 Manhattan West - 62nd floor terrasse guardrail

Solution

  • Keep the welded studs as they are, do not disturb the white waterproofing already installed.

  • Insert an additional non-brittle screw in between each stud, by field drilling +tapping.

  • Also test all the studs with a pull-test machine. And use a torque-wrench (photo) when tightening the nuts on the studs.

Challenge

  • While setting the structural channel on this roof terrasse, the threaded studs proved to be brittle and potentially crack if overtorqued.

  • This was due to too much heat when welding the studs to the steel beam below.

Construction of a 64 floors residential building in the heart of Manhattan. Our scope are the amenities Ornamental Metal and Glass.

2) 3 Manhattan West - exterior stair and elevator shaft

Challenge

  • Maintain the visual continuity of the glass, align the opaque "spandrel" sections of the glass between the white glass of the elevator and the grey glass of the stair.

  • A 1" benchmark mistake made the elevator shaft to be 1" too short.

Solution

  • Precut plywood templates for the stair glass, confirm all shapes, and also where the spandrel should stop and finish up and down.
